Claude Code is Anthropic’s command-line coding agent. Instead of working only through a browser chat, it runs in a terminal and can read a codebase, edit files, execute commands, run tests, and continue working through a task on the machine where it is installed.
That makes a VPS an interesting place to run it. The server stays available when your laptop is off, gives Claude Code its own persistent environment, and provides root access for installing the tools your projects need. HostGator sells a Snappy VPS with Claude Code preinstalled, so I wanted to see what that actually means once you move past the product page.

There is no free trial of this VPS plan itself, what stands in for one is a 30-day money-back guarantee, and HostGator’s own Terms of Service attach a genuine condition to it.
The guarantee applies to VPS hosting as a category, but it explicitly excludes services billed on a monthly term, so choosing month-to-month billing at checkout to keep costs low also forfeits the refund window entirely, a distinction the checkout flow itself never called out when I tested it.
Getting the refund on a qualifying term still takes a step. You have to contact HostGator’s billing department by phone or live chat within the first 30 days, refunds only go back to the original payment method, credit card or PayPal, and checks, money orders, or wire transfers do not qualify for refunds at all.
Budget up to two weeks for the money to land, and cancel any PayPal billing agreement separately or it will keep charging you after HostGator processes its side.
A few more details matter for anyone pointing actual projects at this server. Because Claude Code’s own AI usage falls under HostGator’s definition of an AI Service, an additional AI Terms of Service document applies on top of the standard agreement, though Claude Code authenticates against Anthropic directly rather than through HostGator’s gateway, so that clause matters more if you also route other traffic through AI Credits.
Domain fees, setup fees, and paid add-ons stay non-refundable no matter when you cancel, and letting the account lapse instead of actively canceling it deletes all server content permanently, a genuine risk for uncommitted code that only exists on that one server.
HostGator also reserves the right to migrate your VPS to a different data center without notice, a detail that matters if you chose a region for latency reasons.
Developers judge a server by how it holds up under an actual coding session, compiling, running tests, reading and writing files in a loop, not by a spec sheet, so I provisioned the plan and ran a full benchmark suite against it myself.
Here is what I tested:
This covers NVMe 8 in this one region only. CPU and RAM are dedicated per plan, so the larger tiers should hold similar per-core numbers, but nothing here confirms network or disk speed scale the same way, so treat anything beyond NVMe 8 as unverified.
Two things stood out before the benchmarks themselves. The CPU reports as an AMD EPYC 9J45, but the BIOS model string underneath is generic virtualization placeholder text, and looking up the server’s own IP traces the ISP to Oracle Cloud rather than HostGator.
Root access and persistent sessions were the whole pitch for this product, and the infrastructure underneath that pitch appears to be Oracle Cloud rather than hardware HostGator runs directly. Second, there is no swap configured, zero bytes, which matters directly for anyone running a large build on this tier.

Multi-thread throughput scaled to almost exactly four times the single-thread result, with a tight fairness spread, 53 events of deviation against roughly 19,000.
Concretely, that means a build process, a running test suite, and an active Claude Code session can each get actual CPU time at once rather than one silently starving the others.
What it does not mean is limitless headroom, four cores is four cores, and a parallel build already using every core, make -j4 or similar, will compete directly with a Claude Code session trying to run at the same moment, since there is no fifth core sitting idle to absorb it.

Bandwidth sits comfortably in DDR5 territory and was never the actual limit, 8 GB total with zero swap underneath it is. A large codebase loaded into a language server, a build tool holding intermediate artifacts in memory, and an active Claude Code session all running at once can add up faster than it looks, especially on a monorepo or a language with a memory-hungry compiler.
With no swap configured, exceeding that 8 GB does not mean things get slower, it means the Linux out-of-memory killer starts ending processes to recover RAM, and on a dev box that is exactly as disruptive as it sounds, a build killed mid-compile, a language server that vanishes and has to restart, or Claude Code itself getting terminated in the middle of a task.
Keep meaningful headroom under 8 GB rather than assuming you can run this close to the edge.

The random 4K result is the more relevant one for actual development work. Compiling, running a test suite, and git operations all generate a stream of small file reads and writes rather than one large sequential file, and 44,500 IOPS in both directions at once is well above what even an intensive build process usually demands, so disk is unlikely to be the thing slowing a build down on this tier.
The sequential numbers matter differently, cloning a large repository or pulling a big dependency tree will hit your internet connection’s ceiling before it hits this disk’s, since 4 GB/s of read throughput outpaces almost any network link that could feed it.

I ran this twice against different servers to rule out a fluke, and both landed within a few percent of each other at zero packet loss.
For pulling dependencies, pushing to a remote repository, or Claude Code itself calling out to Anthropic, what actually matters is not the 8 Gbps headline number, it is the low, stable latency and the absence of dropped packets across both runs, since a lost packet mid-request is what turns into a stalled tool call or a failed push, not a slow one.
On raw bandwidth, a developer’s actual traffic, package installs, API calls, git operations, comes nowhere near saturating a gigabit link, so this is not a number you will ever bump against in normal use.

Zero failures across all three stressors, with nothing flagged as untrustworthy, is the result that matters, not the bogo ops totals. I want to be precise about what three minutes each does and does not prove.
It is a reasonable stand-in for a long compile or a heavy test run pushing the server hard for a few minutes, it is not a test of a multi-hour CI pipeline or a full day of continuous agent loops, and a short synthetic test cannot see noisy-neighbor contention from other tenants sharing the same underlying Oracle Cloud hardware. Treat this as evidence the server holds together under a demanding burst, not as proof of behavior across a long sustained workload.
On the question a developer actually cares about, whether this server holds up under actual coding work rather than just a synthetic benchmark, the evidence is strong with one condition that deserves taking seriously.
CPU scaling across threads was close to linear, the random 4K disk numbers comfortably outpace what compilation and git workloads usually demand, network latency stayed low and stable across two independent runs, and sustained stress across CPU, memory, and disk produced zero failures over nine straight minutes.
The condition is memory. Eight gigabytes with zero swap configured means a build, a language server, and an active session that collectively exceed that ceiling do not slow down together, one of them gets killed by the kernel with no warning first.
For a single mid-size project with a normal workflow, that ceiling sits comfortably out of reach. For a large monorepo, a memory-hungry compiler, or several heavy tools running at once, watch memory use directly rather than waiting for a slowdown that will not come, since the failure here is abrupt, not gradual.
Scope this correctly before assuming it carries over. These numbers describe NVMe 8 in Ashburn only, on infrastructure that traces back to Oracle Cloud rather than hardware HostGator appears to run itself, and they come from synthetic benchmarks rather than a live test of Claude Code under an actual project’s own workload.
Developers evaluating a VPS for Claude Code are not asking whether the signup wizard is pretty, they are asking whether they will hit friction, hidden costs, or a mismatched box before they ever open a terminal.
So this section covers that question in full:
I carried this through to a completed order rather than stopping at the configuration screen, since a developer deciding between HostGator and a plain cloud VPS provider is also weighing how much time the entire purchase costs, not just the server spec at the end of it.
I opened the Products menu on the HostGator homepage and found Claude Code sitting in the same list as OpenClaw and n8n, which by now is clearly HostGator’s standard placement for AI tooling rather than anything unique to this product.
Two buttons sit under the pitch on the landing page, “View Plans” and “Launch Claude Code.” The second one implies you could skip straight to provisioning, but it still routes through account creation. It is a shortcut into the wizard, not a bypass of it.
This is the most technically direct landing page of the three AI tools I tested. Instead of adjectives, it lists concrete specs:
The copy explains why those matter in plain terms. Claude Code reads files, rewrites code, runs shell commands, and loops until a task finishes, so it needs an environment that does not sleep or time out the way a laptop or a serverless function would.
That is a concrete technical argument, not filler, and it is the kind of specificity a developer audience actually responds to.
I clicked “View Plans,” which opened a page titled “Choose the right VPS plans for Claude Code,” showing the full standard lineup:
This is the one page in the batch where the Recommended badge lined up with the tier I actually wanted, so I clicked “Choose Plan” on NVMe 8 without any second guessing.
Four vCPUs and 8 GB of RAM is a reasonable floor for running builds, tests, and an active coding loop at the same time, and after watching HostGator’s badge undersell the right tier on two other AI tool pages, it was a relief to see this one get its own recommendation right.
That choice took me straight into the Configure Your Server page, and it loads pre-configured rather than blank.
Claude Code is already selected as the software, NVMe 8 is already locked in as the hardware, and a visible “Start fresh” button sits ready if I wanted to abandon that preset and build from scratch instead.
Every section past that still opens for editing on request:
I left the optional sections at their defaults since NVMe 8 in Ashburn matched what I had already decided on. After settling on that, I clicked “Continue to checkout.”
That click landed me on the cart rather than checkout itself, and sitting there was a one month trial of a professional email product I had not asked for, added automatically. Claude Code’s own configuration steps never mentioned email hosting at any point, so catching this meant actually reading the cart rather than trusting that everything in it was something I chose.
For a developer buying infrastructure to run code unattended, it is a minor charge if you miss it, but it is still a line item you did not choose showing up on your bill.
Checkout combines account creation with the purchase itself rather than splitting them apart. Billing details, a new account password, and payment information, card or PayPal, sit on a single page, with no separate registration step before it.
That collapses what could be two or three screens into one, which works in Claude Code’s favor if you already know exactly what you want and just want root access as fast as possible. The tradeoff is that nothing stands between submitting a card number and the server provisioning, no email verification, no identity check beyond whatever the card processor itself runs in the background.
Given that the product on offer is full root access with persistent sessions, I expected at least one checkpoint confirming who was actually opening this account, and there is not one.
I paid, received a confirmation email within a minute, and was redirected into the client dashboard immediately.
What I thought: The payoff for this whole process shows up the moment you log in, not during checkout. Claude Code is already installed and configured on the server because it was locked into the order before checkout ever started, so there is no Node install, no CLI setup, and no environment configuration waiting for you on first boot.
You get the confirmation email, SSH in, and Claude Code is already running, ready for an actual coding session. Against the alternative of building a plain VPS and installing everything by hand, that is an actual time saving, not a marketing line.
Everything before that point still deserves the same scrutiny as any other checkout. Spotting the trial and accepting no verification step are things a developer used to cloud infrastructure will handle without much thought, but the platform still leaves those checks to you rather than building them in. That is a reasonable trade given what you get on the other end, a server that is ready to use the instant you have credentials, but go in aware of what checkout does not do for you.
After registration, next I wanted to see what a developer actually walks into on first login, since anyone buying infrastructure for coding work is judging the account area by the same standard they judge any other tool, does it get out of the way.
Logging in landed me on a general Dashboard, not anything Claude Code specific. A personalized welcome banner sits at the top, next to a “Website Metrics” widget scoring a site unrelated to the VPS, a domain search box, and a horizontal carousel of upsells for security, hosting, premium SSL, and a bundled AI model subscription.
None of it references Claude Code or development infrastructure.
The sidebar carries the actual structure, made up of Dashboard, Websites, AI Agents, Email & Office, Domains, Hosting, Security, and Services, with Renewal Center and Marketplace below a divider. Reaching the server meant clicking Hosting, then a My Plans sub item that only appears once Hosting is expanded, which lists every hosting product on the account as its own card.
The VPS card itself is functional, showing disk storage as a percentage, live server status, the IP address with a one click copy icon, the server image, and Start, Reboot, Power Off, and Open Terminal buttons directly on the list, no need to open a deeper page just to confirm the box is online.
What that card and the rest of the client area do not show is a plan price, a billing cycle, or a renewal date. Checking Order History and My Payment Methods from the account avatar confirmed neither fills that gap.
Order History lists past orders as a flat table, date, order number, the card used, and the total charged, with nothing tying an order back to a plan name or a renewal schedule.
My Payment Methods shows the saved card on file, masked to its last four digits, with an expiration date and a primary designation, useful for managing how you pay, not for forecasting what a persistent server will cost you going forward.
Renewal Center is a separate menu item I did not open, so I cannot confirm whether that number lives there instead. On security, the avatar menu lists My Profile and Users & Roles, but I did not check either for a two factor authentication toggle.
Support sits behind a question mark icon with a Knowledge Base link and a phone number, plus a chat bubble present on every screen. I did not find a way to open a support ticket directly from the dashboard in what I tested.
What I thought: Developers mostly want an account area that answers one question fast, is my server up, and gets out of the way otherwise. This dashboard technically answers that once you reach the VPS card, storage, status, and IP are all right there without extra clicks, but it makes you walk past a domain search box and four rotating upsells to get to it.
For a product whose landing page led with specs instead of marketing language, the account area behind it feels like a step backward toward exactly the kind of generic hosting dashboard Claude Code’s pitch was trying to distance itself from.
Lastly, I wanted to see how much practical control I actually had over a server running Claude Code, not just what the landing page promised about root access and persistent sessions.
Clicking Manage from the My Plans card opened a panel with five tabs, Overview, License, Access, SSH Keys, and AI Tooling.
Overview repeats the disk storage, status, and IP address from the list view, adds the data center location, and lists a Root Password field that only offers a Reset Password link rather than a way to view the current one.
Because Claude Code was already installed, the Overview tab showed both a Reimage button and a second, separate Manage button next to it, the same label pointing to two different destinations depending on which one you click.

The Access tab earns its place on this specific review, since the landing page’s whole pitch was full root access and persistent sessions.
It delivered on both, a genuine browser based SSH terminal for day to day work, plus a separate VNC based recovery console for the rare case SSH itself becomes unreachable, neither behind an extra charge.
The SSH Keys tab backs that up, letting you add a public key for password less login and confirming explicitly that keys survive reboots, restarts, and reimages, which matters if you plan to keep the same access set up through an OS change later.
The AI Tooling tab is easy to misread as something Claude Code requires. It does not. The balance starts empty, and the API key panel stays locked until credits are added.
According to HostGator’s own documentation, these credits are a prepaid balance for its unified AI Gateway, the balance resets to zero if left unused past an expiration window though existing API keys and workspaces stay intact, and a fresh top up resets that clock for the whole balance.
None of that is mandatory for running Claude Code itself, which authenticates against Anthropic directly rather than through this panel, so a developer can ignore AI Tooling entirely unless they want to route other traffic through HostGator’s gateway.
I also opened Reimage to confirm the Claude Code install is not permanent. It opens a Plain OS tab (Alma, CentOS, Fedora, Rocky, Debian, Ubuntu) and an Applications tab listing more than forty one click options, including several other named developer and agent tools.
I selected the current image again rather than wiping the server, and the panel locked into a “Server reimaging is in progress” state while it worked, confirming the rebuild is genuine rather than cosmetic.
Two gaps stood out that matter in particular for a persistent coding environment. There is no backup or snapshot feature anywhere across these five tabs, which is a genuine concern for uncommitted work sitting on the server rather than in version control.
There is no resource monitoring beyond the disk storage percentage, no CPU graph, no RAM graph, nothing that would show a long running build or an agent loop quietly consuming more memory than expected.
What I thought: The parts of this panel that matter most to a developer, root access, SSH keys, an actual terminal, a recovery console, all worked exactly as described, and the AI Tooling panel is honest that it is a separate optional product rather than something Claude Code depends on. What is missing matters too, though. Persistent sessions are the entire selling point of this product, and persistent means valuable state can accumulate on the disk over time, so the absence of any backup option here is a genuine gap for exactly the workload this VPS is built to run.
Claude Code does not get a second Manage button next to Reimage the way OpenClaw and n8n do, because there is no dashboard for it to open.
Claude Code is a command line tool, not a web app, so confirming it actually shipped installed meant opening the browser terminal from the Access tab and checking for myself rather than clicking anything on the Overview page.
I connected over SSH and ran claude –version. It returned 2.1.126 (Claude Code) immediately, confirming the install was genuine and already sitting on the server rather than something I would need to set up myself.
That single command is the entire “what happens next” for this product, there is no onboarding screen, no account creation step, no setup wizard, you are simply dropped into a server that already has a working Claude Code binary waiting for you to start a session.
What I thought: The absence of a dashboard here is not a gap, it matches what Claude Code actually is. A developer reaching for this product wants a terminal with the tool already installed, not a web interface standing between them and the command line, and that is exactly what I found. Confirming it took one command and a few seconds, which is about as close to zero friction as a “what happens next” step can get.
Tracing back through this section, the arc runs like this. Registration folded account creation into checkout itself, no separate sign up screen, a wizard that already had Claude Code and NVMe 8 selected before I touched anything, and for the first time across the AI tools I tested on this VPS line, the Recommended badge actually matched the tier that loaded by default, so I did not have to second guess the sizing the way I did elsewhere.
Checkout still accepted my card with no identity check at all, and an email trial I never asked for was sitting in the cart by default.
The Dashboard I reached after paying gave no hint that a developer had just bought infrastructure built for persistent coding sessions. It sat behind a Hosting menu and a My Plans sub item, past a domain search box and a rotating carousel of upsells aimed at website owners rather than developers. The VPS card itself was informative once I found it, storage, status, IP, one click Start and Reboot, but nothing about the account area matched the technical, specs first tone of the Claude Code landing page that sold me on this in the first place.
Server Management delivered on the parts that matter most for this specific product. Root access, a genuine browser terminal, a recovery console for emergencies, and SSH keys that survive a reimage exactly as documented, all worked as described.
What was missing stood out more here than it would elsewhere, no backup control for a workload whose entire selling point is persistent state accumulating over time, and no resource monitoring beyond a single storage percentage to catch a runaway build or an agent loop before it becomes a problem.
Then came the part this whole section exists to answer, whether a developer actually lands on working infrastructure without touching a setup process first.
Claude Code has no dashboard and no Manage button beyond Reimage, because it is a terminal tool, not a web app, so I connected over SSH and ran claude –version myself. It returned 2.1.126 immediately. No onboarding screen, no account creation, no wizard, the binary was already there and working the moment I looked for it, which is about as close to zero friction as a “getting started” step can get.
Claude Code buyers are developers, and developers asking for support usually have a precise, technical problem in mind rather than a general one, an environment variable is not being picked up, a connection is failing authentication, a specific command is not behaving as documented.
That is a higher bar than most hosting support questions clear. HostGator gives you three ways to reach it, a live chat bubble on every page, a Knowledge Base behind the same question mark icon, and a phone number. I tested live chat and the Knowledge Base.
One click opened the chat, no menu or category selection first. A short intake asked for my name and whether I wanted a transcript, both answered in seconds, then a human agent, Neeraja, took the conversation directly, no bot troubleshooting attempt in between.
Since a developer running Claude Code is likely exposing a dev server or an API endpoint at some point, I asked the question built for exactly that, whether opening a non-standard port like 8443 with ufw or iptables directly on the server is enough, or whether HostGator’s own network level firewall and DDoS protection sits in front of that and needs a separate rule opened on their side.
After confirming my plan, Snappy 4000 NVMe 8, the agent took about seven minutes to respond with a link to a generic Stack Exchange post on iptables, a privatebin paste of supplementary notes, and a line stating traffic would reach the server right away once the port was opened locally, closing with the note that since I had root access, I could handle it myself.
That answer confirmed only the side of the question I could have resolved with a search engine, and never actually addressed whether HostGator’s own edge protection treats a manually opened port any differently.
For a developer used to precise answers from documentation or a terminal, this read as confident rather than complete.
What I thought: Speed to a human and the absence of an AI layer in between are genuine positives, and nobody tried to upsell Premium Support during the exchange. But a developer asking a networking question wants the actual architecture explained, not just reassurance that it will probably work, and this conversation gave reassurance rather than architecture.
After live chat, I decided to see what the documentation offered instead.
Searching claude code returned sixteen results, spread across categories including CodeGuard, Linux Dedicated Hosting, and Windows Dedicated Hosting, because the term appears as a dependency inside articles about several other agents rather than being isolated to its own topic. Finding the article actually about Claude Code meant recognizing it by title rather than trusting the category filters, though it did rank first.
I opened How to Connect HostGator AI Credits to Claude Code, and it is built the way a developer would want it, terminal commands you can copy directly, actual output shown so you can compare against your own session, and a clear split between a confirmed method and an unconfirmed one.
Section 1 sets ANTHROPIC_API_KEY and ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL as shell environment variables, described explicitly as the method confirmed on a live server, and shows the full session output, including Claude Code skipping its usual Anthropic sign-in screen entirely once those variables are set.
Section 2, for an install that has already been signed in through a subscription or console key, is marked not yet verified, and the article tells you plainly why the logout step matters, skip it and Claude Code keeps using your existing login and silently ignores the AI Credits gateway with no error to explain why.
A closing section on authentication errors ties a 401 response to either the wrong endpoint format or a key the gateway will not accept.
What I thought: This article is technically precise on its own terms, live terminal output, an explicit confirmed versus unverified distinction, and a specific explanation of a failure mode that would otherwise look like nothing happened at all. It is also scoped narrowly, if your Claude Code problem is not about which account it authenticates against, this search will not lead you to it.
The Knowledge Base as a whole made me work harder than it should have to reach that article, sixteen results for a two word search, most of them irrelevant, with no way to tell from the title alone which one was actually about Claude Code itself rather than mentioning it as a prerequisite.
Once you land on the right article the writing is careful and technically honest, but a developer searching a common term like claude code is going to spend more time filtering than a developer searching a less ambiguous product name would.
Support for Claude Code holds up better on the documentation side than on the live side. Live chat reached a person in about a minute with no bot in the way, but the answer to a networking question a developer would actually ask left the architecture unexplained and pointed to third party sources instead of HostGator’s own material.
The Knowledge Base article on AI Credits, once you find it past a noisy search, is precise enough to trust, actual terminal output, an honest confirmed versus unverified split, and a specific explanation for a failure mode that would otherwise be confusing.
Yes, for the specific claim it makes, with memory as a genuine condition attached.
