I signed up for a VPS, went through the setup myself, tested the server’s performance, and contacted support when I ran into a webhook problem.

There is no free trial of this VPS plan itself, what stands in for one is a 30-day money-back guarantee, and HostGator’s own Terms of Service attach a genuine condition to it.
The guarantee applies to VPS hosting as a category, but it explicitly excludes services billed on a monthly term, so choosing month-to-month billing at checkout to keep costs low also means giving up the refund window entirely. If cost control was your reason for leaving n8n Cloud in the first place, that is not a detail to miss.
Getting the refund on a qualifying term still takes a step. You have to contact HostGator’s billing department by phone or live chat within the first 30 days, refunds only go back to the original payment method, credit card or PayPal, and checks, money orders, or wire transfers do not qualify for refunds at all.
Budget up to two weeks for the money to land, and cancel any PayPal billing agreement separately or it will keep charging you after HostGator processes its side.
A few more details matter for anyone routing production workflows through this. Because n8n’s AI nodes fall under HostGator’s definition of an AI Service, an additional AI Terms of Service document applies on top of the standard agreement. Domain fees, setup fees, and paid add-ons stay non-refundable no matter when you cancel, and letting the account lapse instead of actively canceling it deletes all server content permanently, which is a genuine risk if your workflows and their credentials only exist on that one server.
HostGator also reserves the right to migrate your VPS to a different data center without notice, a detail that matters if you chose a region on purpose to keep latency low for the external services your workflows call.
Workflow automation puts a different kind of load on a server than a website does, lots of small, frequent operations rather than one big sustained task, so I provisioned the plan and ran a full benchmark suite against it directly instead of trusting the spec sheet.
Here is what I tested:
This covers NVMe 8 in this one region only. CPU and RAM are dedicated per plan, so the larger tiers should hold similar per-core numbers, but I have nothing confirming that network or disk speed scale the same way, so treat anything outside NVMe 8 as unverified.
Two things stood out before the benchmarks themselves. The CPU reports as an AMD EPYC 9J45, but the BIOS model string underneath is generic virtualization placeholder text, and a lookup on the server’s own IP traces the ISP to Oracle Cloud rather than HostGator.
If you are routing production workflows through this server, the infrastructure underneath HostGator’s own branding appears to be Oracle Cloud rather than hardware HostGator operates directly. Second, there is no swap configured, zero bytes, which matters for how a busy automation queue behaves under load.

Multi-thread throughput scaled to almost exactly four times the single-thread number, with a tight fairness spread, 53 events of deviation against roughly 19,000.
In practical terms, that means several workflows executing at the same moment, one processing a webhook, one running a scheduled trigger, one doing a Function node calculation, can each get actual CPU time rather than queuing behind each other.
It does not mean unlimited concurrency, four dedicated cores is a firm ceiling, and workflows heavy on Function nodes doing actual computation rather than just waiting on API calls will compete for that CPU directly, so a burst of several compute-heavy workflows firing at once is where you would first feel this limit.

Bandwidth lands solidly in DDR5 territory and was never the actual constraint, the 8 GB ceiling with zero swap underneath it is. n8n keeps active execution data in memory for the duration of a workflow run, inputs, outputs, and the state passed between nodes, and that footprint grows with every workflow running at once and every large payload, a bulk CSV, a big API response, passing through it.
With no swap configured, a queue of simultaneous executions that pushes past what 8 GB can hold does not slow down gracefully, it hits a hard wall, and the out-of-memory killer starts terminating processes to recover RAM.
Concretely, that means a spike in triggered workflows, a webhook storm, a batch job kicking off dozens of executions at once, is more likely to end with n8n itself getting killed than with workflows simply taking longer to finish.

The random 4K number is the one that actually matters for n8n.
Execution history, credentials, and workflow state usually sit in a SQLite or Postgres database doing frequent small reads and writes, which looks far more like random 4K traffic than one large sequential file.
A busy production database under actual load usually runs a few hundred to a few thousand IOPS, so 44,500 IOPS in both directions at once gives that database wide room to work, disk is unlikely to be your bottleneck even with a fairly active execution history to log.

I ran this twice against different servers to rule out a fluke, and both runs came in within a few percent of each other at zero packet loss.
n8n’s whole value depends on calling other services reliably, webhooks, APIs, third party integrations, and what matters for that is not the 8 Gbps headline figure, it is the low, stable latency and the zero dropped packets across two independent runs, since a lost packet mid-call is what turns into a failed node and a workflow error.
On raw throughput, roughly 1 Gbps upload is about 125 MB per second sustained, and a normal workflow sending JSON payloads to APIs is nowhere near that volume, so bandwidth itself will not be your constraint, reliability under many rapid small calls is what this result actually speaks to.

Zero failures across all three stressors, with nothing flagged as untrustworthy, is the result that matters, not the bogo ops totals.
I want to be precise about what three minutes each actually proves. It is a reasonable stand-in for a burst, a scheduled batch of workflows all firing within the same window, not for what happens across a full day of continuous automation traffic, and a short synthetic test cannot see noisy-neighbor contention from other tenants sharing the same physical Oracle Cloud hardware underneath. Treat this as evidence the server holds together under an acute spike, not as proof of how it behaves across a demanding week of scheduled runs.
On the question that matters for n8n, whether this server holds up under the kind of frequent, small-scale load workflow automation actually generates, the evidence is solid but comes with one genuine condition attached. CPU scaling across threads was close to linear, the random 4K disk result gives a workflow database wide room to breathe, network latency stayed low and stable across two runs, and sustained stress across CPU, memory, and disk produced zero failures over nine straight minutes.
The condition is memory. Eight gigabytes with zero swap configured means a burst of simultaneous executions, a webhook storm, a large batch trigger, that pushes past what 8 GB can hold does not slow n8n down, it gets a process killed by the kernel with no gradual warning first.
If your workflow volume stays modest and your payloads are small, that ceiling is comfortably far away. If you are running many concurrent, high-volume workflows, plan for that ceiling explicitly rather than assuming the server will just get slower under pressure.
Keep the scope in mind before assuming this applies beyond what I tested. These numbers describe NVMe 8 in Ashburn only, on infrastructure that traces back to Oracle Cloud rather than hardware HostGator appears to run itself, and they come from synthetic benchmarks, not a live load test of n8n running its own actual workflows.
CPU and memory should scale proportionally on other tiers since those are dedicated per plan, but I have not verified that network or disk performance hold the same ceiling on the smaller or larger Snappy plans, so size up or down with that gap in mind rather than assuming it.
n8n buyers are usually already running workflows somewhere, on n8n Cloud, a self hosted Docker box, or a competitor, and what they want to know here is whether moving that workflow onto a HostGator VPS removes friction or adds it.
That question breaks down into a few parts, so this section covers all of them:
I followed the process through to the point of an active order, not just the configuration screen, because the checkout experience is part of what you are paying for when you move a workflow off a platform you already trust.
I opened the Products menu on the HostGator homepage rather than Web Hosting, and found n8n sitting there alongside the other AI tools. That is a deliberate split. A live looking workflow diagram animates across the page, a webhook triggering Slack and Gmail steps, an AI classification node, a database write, showing over a thousand executions and zero errors. It is a demo, not an active account, but the message is specific rather than generic, which is more convincing than most AI tool marketing I have tested.
I clicked “Compare Plans” next, which opened a pricing page framed around “built for n8n automaters like you,” odd copy since “automaters” is not an actual word. The tiers underneath are the full standard lineup:
HostGator’s badge points to NVMe 4, but I clicked “Choose Plan” on NVMe 8 instead. If you are running more than a handful of workflows, especially ones that call AI models or hit multiple integrations per execution, 4 GB of RAM leaves very little room before things start queuing or timing out.
Sizing up to NVMe 8 gave me enough headroom to treat n8n like an actual production tool rather than a single test workflow.
That choice carried me into the Configure Your Server page, and it arrives pre-configured rather than blank.
n8n is already selected as the software and NVMe 8 is already locked in as the hardware, with a visible option to start fresh if I would rather not use the preset at all.
Every section past that still opens for editing on request:
I left the optional sections alone since NVMe 8 in Ashburn was already what I wanted. After settling on that, I clicked “Continue to checkout.”
That click put me on the cart page first, and the cart is where I found a one month trial of a professional email product sitting in there automatically, opted in without my asking for it. Nothing in the n8n configuration steps had mentioned email hosting anywhere, so this only showed up because I read the line items rather than clicking straight through to payment.
For someone moving a live automation workflow off another platform mainly to control cost, an unrequested add on in the cart is exactly the kind of detail that undercuts the pricing story the landing page just told you.
Checkout itself folds account creation into the order rather than treating it as a separate step. Billing information, a new password, and payment details, card or PayPal, all sit on one page, with no separate sign up screen before it.
That is fast, and if you already know you want n8n on HostGator, it gets you to a working order in a handful of clicks.
It also means there is no identity check between entering a card number and the charge clearing, nothing confirming the email address is legitimate, nothing confirming the card belongs to you beyond what the card network itself verifies in the background.
I submitted payment and it went through immediately. A confirmation email arrived inside a minute, and I landed in the client dashboard without any additional step.
What I thought: The part of this process that actually earns the “one click deploy” claim on the landing page is what happens once you pay, not the payment itself. n8n arrives already installed on the server because it was locked into the configuration before checkout ever started, so there is no docker-compose file to write, no reverse proxy to configure, and no setup wizard waiting for you on first boot. You get the confirmation email, log in, and the n8n interface is already there, ready for you to start building workflows. That is an actual improvement over spinning up a plain VPS and installing n8n by hand, and it is the strongest argument for choosing this route over doing it yourself.
The checkout leading up to that point still deserves scrutiny on its own terms. Sizing past the Recommended badge yourself, catching an unrequested trial, and accepting no identity check before payment are things a careful buyer can manage, but they are still things you have to manage.
If cost control was the whole reason you left n8n Cloud, pay attention going in, because the payoff, a server that is ready to work the moment you log in, holds up, even if the path there asks a little more of you than it should.
After registration, next I wanted to see what an n8n buyer actually walks into on login, since the whole reason someone chooses self hosting is control, and that starts with whether they can find and understand their server without digging.
Logging in landed me on a general Dashboard, not anything n8n specific. A personalized welcome banner sits at the top, next to a “Website Metrics” widget scoring a site unrelated to the VPS, a domain search box, and a horizontal carousel of upsells for security, hosting, premium SSL, and a bundled AI model subscription. Nothing on this screen mentions n8n or workflow automation.
The sidebar carries the actual structure, made up of Dashboard, Websites, AI Agents, Email & Office, Domains, Hosting, Security, and Services, with Renewal Center and Marketplace below a divider. Reaching the server meant clicking Hosting, then a My Plans sub item that only appears once Hosting is expanded, which lists every hosting product on the account as its own card.
The VPS card itself is useful once you get there, showing disk storage as a percentage, live server status, the IP address with a one click copy icon, the server image, and Start, Reboot, Power Off, and Open Terminal buttons directly on the list, no need to open a deeper page just to check whether it is running.
What the card and the rest of the client area do not show is a plan price, a billing cycle, or a renewal date. Checking Order History and My Payment Methods from the account avatar confirmed neither fills that gap.
Order History lists past orders as a flat table, date, order number, the card used, and the total charged, with nothing tying an order back to a plan name or a renewal schedule, which matters if cost tracking against n8n Cloud is the whole reason you are here.
My Payment Methods shows the saved card on file, masked to its last four digits, with an expiration date and a primary designation, useful for managing how you pay, not for seeing what renewal will actually cost. Renewal Center is a separate menu item I did not open, so I cannot confirm whether that number lives there instead.
On security, the avatar menu lists My Profile and Users & Roles, but I did not check either for a two factor authentication toggle.
Support sits behind a question mark icon with a Knowledge Base link and a phone number, plus a chat bubble present on every screen. I did not find a way to open a support ticket directly from the dashboard in what I tested.
What I thought: If cost and control are the reasons you left n8n Cloud, the dashboard is a mixed signal on both fronts. The VPS card itself gives you concrete information at a glance, storage, status, IP, without extra clicks, which respects your time. But the billing details that actually determine whether self hosting is saving you money, the renewal price and the renewal date, are nowhere on the screens I could reach, which means tracking your own cost comparison against n8n Cloud is on you, not something the dashboard surfaces for you.
Lastly, I wanted to see what actual control I had over the server running n8n, not just what the product page promised about deploying it in one click.
Clicking Manage from the My Plans card opened a panel with five tabs, Overview, License, Access, SSH Keys, and AI Tooling.
Overview repeats the disk storage, status, and IP address from the list view, adds the data center location, and lists a Root Password field that only offers a Reset Password link rather than a way to view the current one.
Because n8n was already installed, the Overview tab showed both a Reimage button and a second, separate Manage button next to it, the same word doing two different jobs depending on which one you click, which is a source of confusion the first time you see it.

The AI Tooling tab deserves a clear explanation if n8n workflows are the reason you are here, since several n8n nodes call out to AI models. The balance starts empty, and the API key panel stays locked until credits are added.
According to HostGator’s own documentation, these credits are a prepaid balance for its unified AI Gateway, the balance resets to zero if left unused past an expiration window though existing API keys and workspaces stay intact, and a fresh top up resets that clock for the whole balance.
The part that actually matters for n8n is that this panel is entirely optional. If your workflows call a model provider directly with their own API key inside an HTTP Request or AI node rather than routing through HostGator’s gateway, you never touch this balance, and n8n runs those steps exactly the same either way.
I also opened Reimage to see how permanent the n8n install actually is. It opens a Plain OS tab (Alma, CentOS, Fedora, Rocky, Debian, Ubuntu) and an Applications tab listing more than forty one click options, spanning control panels, e-commerce platforms, and several other named automation and agent tools.
I selected the current image again rather than wiping the server, and the panel locked into a “Server reimaging is in progress” state while it worked, confirming this actually rebuilds the server rather than just relabeling it.
A few gaps stood out that matter for anyone running actual workflows here. There is no backup or snapshot feature anywhere across these five tabs, which is a genuine concern if your workflows carry state or credentials you would not want to reconstruct from scratch.
There is no resource monitoring beyond the disk storage percentage, no CPU graph, no RAM graph, nothing that would tell you a workflow is starting to strain the box before it fails outright.
And despite the checkout page advertising DDoS protection and a firewall as standing features, none of these tabs expose port management or firewall rules directly, which matters the moment you need to open a custom port for an incoming webhook.
What I thought: The controls that exist do what they say, reimaging actually rebuilds the server, SSH keys persist through it, and the AI Tooling panel is upfront that it is optional rather than a hidden cost. But n8n workflows accumulate state and credentials over time in a way a static website does not, and the absence of any backup option here means a bad reimage or a corrupted disk takes your workflows with it, with nothing in this panel to restore from.
Clicking the second Manage button, the one that sits next to Reimage once n8n is actually installed, did not lead to another HostGator screen at all.
It dropped me straight onto n8n’s own first run screen, titled “Set up owner account,” asking for an email address, first name, last name, and a password, with an optional checkbox to receive security and product update emails.
That confirms where HostGator’s job for this product line actually ends. Getting from a card charge to a working n8n installation took no docker-compose file, no reverse proxy configuration, and no waiting on a blank server to figure out what to install.
You click Manage, and n8n’s own setup wizard is already there, the same account creation flow you would hit self hosting it anywhere else. From that point on, it is entirely n8n’s own onboarding, and HostGator’s part of the job is finished.
Walking back through this section, the arc runs like this. Registration folded account creation into checkout itself, no separate sign up screen, a wizard that already had n8n and NVMe 8 selected before I touched anything. I sized past the Recommended badge myself, since 4 GB of RAM looked thin for anything running more than a handful of workflows, and I caught an email trial sitting in the cart that I never asked for. Checkout accepted my card with no identity check at all.

Then came the part this whole section exists to answer, whether n8n actually arrives ready to use without you touching a server yourself. Clicking the second Manage button, the one that only appears once n8n is installed, dropped me straight onto n8n’s own “Set up owner account” screen, no HostGator step in between, no docker-compose file, no reverse proxy, nothing left blank for me to configure. That is the one click promise held up under an actual click, not just on the landing page.
So the verdict splits along a clear line. On the specific claim, a server with n8n already installed and ready for its own account setup, HostGator delivers exactly what it promises. On everything wrapped around that claim, checkout verification, an account area that hides billing details you would need to judge the cost tradeoff against n8n Cloud, and a management panel with no backup or monitoring for a tool that carries state, you are doing more of the work yourself than the pitch admits to.
n8n workflows tend to depend on other services responding correctly, webhooks firing, APIs answering, credentials staying valid, so when something in that chain breaks, you need support that understands automation infrastructure, not just hosting basics.
HostGator gives you three ways to reach it, a live chat bubble on every page, a Knowledge Base behind the same question mark icon, and a phone number. I tested live chat and the Knowledge Base.
One click opened the chat, no menu first. A short intake asked for my name and whether I wanted a transcript, both answered in seconds, then a human agent, Neeraja, took over directly with no bot troubleshooting layer in front of her.
Since n8n workflows commonly rely on incoming webhooks, I asked the question that matters most for that use case, whether opening a non-standard port like 8443 with ufw or iptables directly on the server is enough, or whether HostGator’s own network level firewall and DDoS protection sits in front of that and needs a separate rule opened on their side.
After confirming my plan, Snappy 4000 NVMe 8, the agent took about seven minutes to answer with a link to a generic Stack Exchange post on iptables, a privatebin paste of supplementary notes, and a line stating traffic would reach the server right away once the port was opened locally, closing with the note that since I had root access, I could handle it myself.
That answer never actually addressed whether HostGator’s edge protection interferes with n8n’s incoming webhook traffic, it just confirmed the local firewall side, which is the part a quick search would have told me anyway.
What I thought: Getting to a person fast with no bot in the way is a genuine convenience, and nobody tried to sell me anything extra. But if a webhook silently fails to reach an n8n workflow, this conversation would not have told me whether the cause sits in my own configuration or in a layer HostGator manages, which is precisely the ambiguity that matters when automation depends on things arriving on time.
After the live chat, I decided to check the documentation directly. I searched n8n and got three results, a clean, focused set with no noise to sort through.
I opened How to Add HostGator AI Credits to n8n, and unlike the terminal-only guides for the other AI tools, this one is built around n8n’s own settings interface, with actual screenshots at every stage, the Personal Agents panel with a Settings link in the sidebar, the Configure Anthropic modal with its enable toggle and credential dropdown, and the Anthropic account credential screen where you paste your AI Credits API key and the gateway’s base URL.
Seven numbered steps walk from opening Settings and Chat through saving and confirming, with a callout upfront clarifying that if you already have a Claude subscription through Anthropic directly, you do not need any of this, it only matters if you want n8n’s model usage routed through HostGator’s credits balance.
Closing warnings cover authentication errors, double check the base URL and make sure the key is an AI Credits key rather than one from Anthropic directly, and note that this configuration is per provider, so adding OpenAI or Google separately means repeating the same steps for each one.
What I thought: The Knowledge Base as a whole did well on this specific search, three results, all correct, screenshots that match the current interface rather than a stale one. What it does not do is tell you where n8n’s own documentation ends and HostGator’s begins, this article covers connecting a model provider and nothing about running n8n itself, so treat this Knowledge Base as a place to solve HostGator-specific setup questions, not as a substitute for n8n’s own docs once your workflows get complicated.
Support for n8n splits along a familiar line. Live chat gets you a person in about a minute with no bot in the way, but the answer I received left the one part of the question that actually mattered for webhook-dependent workflows, whether HostGator’s own network layer interferes with a manually opened port, unaddressed.
The Knowledge Base is strong on the narrow question of routing model calls through AI Credits, with actual interface screenshots and clear scoping about who should skip the article entirely, but it has nothing to say about n8n itself once you move past that one integration.
If your support need touches AI Credits, self service will solve it cleanly. If it touches n8n’s actual workflow behavior or the networking underneath it, expect to do some of that diagnosis yourself, since neither channel I tested was built to go that deep.
